The Beauty of Solo Travel: An Interview with Mike Medves

What’s it like to be a solo traveler with Norrøna Hvitserk Adventure of Norway?

Hi Mike, you’ve been on two tours with Norrøna Hvitserk Adventure of Norway! Tell us a bit about yourself.

Well, my name is Mike, and I work in the IT industry in Australia. I made the long trip to Bodø from Sydney to leave technology behind for a bit and experience the beautiful outdoors and hiking that Norway has to offer.

Have you joined trips as a solo traveler in the past? If so, how were those experiences for you?

I often travel alone. As a solo traveler, I tend to combine independent travel to see cities and their sights with small group adventure based tours to get into the outdoors for some great hiking and nature photography. I find it offers the opportunity to travel with like-minded people from around the world, while also interacting with locals, and hiking with this sort of group beats hitting the track on your own for a long hike. I’ve managed to make some good friends on these sorts of trips that I have travelled with again in future, like I did on one of Norrøna Hvitserk Adventure trips. I met a fellow traveler on a solo tour in Australia, and we decided to meet on a Norrøna Hvitserk Adventure tour for a portion of my Norway travels.

What inspired you to sign up for a trip with Norrøna Hvitserk Adventure? Let alone two?

I had wanted to travel to Norway for a long time now and experience the country. Having read a lot on the Lofoten Islands and the famous landmarks and hiking to Trolltunga, Preikestolen and Kjerag, I wanted to find a local operator to travel with. I find they offer the best travel experiences, and Norrøna Hvitserk Adventure offered some amazing itineraries for the what I wanted to cover.

How was your experience as a solo traveler on your trip with Norrøna Hvitserk Adventure of Norway?

I found Norrøna Hvitserk Adventure to be a great local operator, that had very knowledge and friendly guides to immerse you into Norway. I remember some great local stories, fables and fun activities in between hikes that brought the group together. Of course it helps that they operate in one of the most beautiful countries in the world – I’ll never forget those amazing views off the cliffs and ledges over the fjords and islands. Its simply stunning.

Do you keep in touch with any of your fellow travelers from your trip with Norrøna Hvitserk Adventure? How have the friendships you made influenced your life today?

Some of the group continues to keep in touch today and I enjoy seeing updates on Facebook about their travel adventures and what’s happening at home. One of the things you get from traveling in a group is different perspectives on the world and travel ideas of your next destination… which is kind of exciting. Fills you with ideas from like-minded people.

Would you join another Norrøna Hvitserk Adventure trip as a solo traveler?

YES, definitely. I managed to see a lot of Norway on my last trip, but it just sparked my interest in seeing more of the country. As I spoke with the guides and locals, I learned more about the country and other places that I want to visit on my next trip. I was looking at the Norrøna Hvitserk Adventure website just a few days back from receiving their regular email newsletters and was happy to see how many more trips are on offer to new places. My dilemma now is deciding which one, a great problem to have :)
