Ski and Sail Adventure in Hjørundfjorden

Images & Video
New trip
Mixed Winter Activities Level 4 7 days 6-12 participants

Overview

Highlights

  • Visit Ålesund, one of Norway's most beautiful cities.
  • Ski from mountain summits all the way down to the fjords.
  • Join the R/V Kinfish, a recently renovated research vessel for an entire week of ski and sail
  • Wine and dine on the fjord
  • Lots of big ski days!

Ski touring around the fjord of Hjørund on the west coast of Norway is Norway's answer to the Alps. The incredible terrain is for experienced back country skiers and split-boarders only, and you need to have knowledge of backcountry ski gear, and how to use it. Avalanche training is recommended.

The tour around the Hjørundfjord is a randonee skiing tour, where we skin with our skis on our feet on the way up, and ski down to the fjords. We ski to summits, explore valleys and numerous destinations en route. The daily legs around the fjord are tough, with ascents of up to 1,200-1,300 metres. Good physical fitness and experience skiing are mandatory.

Hjørundfjorden have multiple fantastic destination options, but the weather and skiing conditions determine our route. There are a variety of options based on the prevailing conditions. No matter where we ski, the fantastic view of the surrounding fjords will follow us. On some of the daily legs, we ski right down to the shore, and in the right conditions you can go literally from the summit to sea. If the conditions are good enough, we head up to some of Sunnmøre's classic randonee summits – Slogen, Blåbretind, Kolåstind and Skårasalen are some of the possible destinations en route.

Skiing around a fjord is a unique experience – and if you dream about going on a special skiing tour, this is a definite choice!

Ålesund, which is the closest town for this tour, has good connections (direct flights) to several foreign cities (KLM, among others, operates daily flights). Norwegian and SAS also operate several daily flights to Oslo.

Equipment List

Take a good look at this list, and make sure you bring everything you need. We encourage you to use what you have for this trip, and purchase items if you're missing something important on the list below. We have divided the gear list into three categories:

  1. Required: If you do not own this gear, you must acquire it for your trip.
  2. Recommended: Gear we suggest to be comfortable, but it is not imperative.
  3. Optional: Fun, additional luxuries.

Layering is extremely important in a variable climate like Norway. This list will guide you through the essentials. Remember the Norwegian saying "There is no bad weather, only bad gear", and prepare appropriately for any weather. You can read about the weather where you're traveling here.

The video below if for SUMMER trips, but you can still get some good tips for Winter! Welcome to Norway!

Please contact us at hvitserk@norrona.com if you have any questions.

We always recommend wool in the Norwegian Mountains, but if you already have synthetic layers and don't want to buy new ones, synthetic is okay.

Touring skis, boots and backcountry ski poles.

MEDIUM INSULATED JACKET

Use a synthetic or down jacket that fits over your base layer and mid layer, yet underneathe your rain shell. Should be comfortable with full range of movement when all layers are on.

EXTRA TOP LAYER

Bring an extra medium thick layer to add underneathe your medium insulated jacket in case you get cold easily.
