A Week in the Lyngen Alps

One of Norway's best ski touring destinations

From USD 2994

Seven wonderful days await you in one of Norway's most beautiful mountain areas. Our trip to Lyngen can be summed up by some very basic ingredients: Summits, après-ski, good food, good drinks, and good company. Do you really need anything more?

Highlights

  • Ski in one of the country's finest backcountry skiing mountain ranges
  • Local guide with an abundance of knowledge so that you get safely both up and down the mountain
  • He/she will also take you to the best peaks with the best snow conditions
  • Stay overnight at the lovely Magic Mountain Lodge
  • Sauna in the evening...
  • Northern Lights too! (If we are lucky)

Lyngen is a fantastic area for ski touring with alpine peaks and a large number of varied descents for all skill levels. We stay at Magic Mountain Lodge where you are guaranteed to meet like-minded free-riders from all over the world, enjoy home-cooked food, and share stories from the mountains during après-ski.

Which peaks we will conquer will be decided by the guide on the given day to ensure safe and good skiing experiences. Some possible peaks are Rørnestinden (1041 masl), Storgalten (1219), Daltinden (1532) and Rundfjellet (1413). Our guide is certified, has a lot of local knowledge, and last but not least, is an expert in finding innovative routes with good snow conditions. The different day tours will be adapted to the group's skill level.

The trip starts on arrival in Tromsø where we will drive together to Magic Mountain Lodge in Lyngen. This place is run by the local couple Henrika and Patrik, two globetrotters who together have created a cozy and welcoming accommodation for like-minded guests.

Physical level

3/6 Physical

On these trips, some of the stages are demanding. On level 3 mountain hikes, there are often some long stages, and / or a demanding summit push where it can get cold. You must stand up to reach the goal, and have a good training basis and good health before departure. We sleep in tents and / or in cabins and hotels, but you do not have to have experience with tent life to participate. If the trip includes activities such as kayaking, cycling, climbing, glacier, skiing / mountaineering, it is an advantage to have experience with this activity.

Activities / trips with some risk. Some incidents may occur, and they may be of such a nature that they require professional help.

Training and preperations

In order to participate on this trip, you must have good physical fitness ascending and descending on skis. Ascents can vary depending on the group's ability and snow conditions, but being able to ascend 1,200 - 2,000 meters per day is important when participating on this trip.

It's important to have experience in backcountry skiing, skinning, and to be an able skier in mountain terrain. Avalanche awareness and training are important, as well as the knowledge of how to use avalanche safety equipment, such as a beacon, shovel, and probe. Your guide will have the final risk management decision-making on this trip in order to ensure safe ascents and descents each day. Changes in weather, snow, or road conditions can change the itinerary that is presented in the day-to-day program.

Accommodation and food

We stay at Magic Mountain Lodge, from which it is a short distance to most of the areas we will go skiing. We sleep in shared rooms with twin beds or a double bed if desired. If you are traveling alone, we will make sure that you share a room with someone of the same sex.

There is no shower/toilet in every room, but good communal amenities. The standard is simple but very nice and traditional. We eat a hearty breakfast, prepare a packed lunch to take with us, and in the evening we have a long and enjoyable dinner together.

Other information

The easiest way to get to our meeting point, Tromsø, is to take a flight within Norway from one of the main cities (Oslo, Bergen, etc), using an airline such as Norwegian, SAS, or Flyr. Please contact us if you need any help with this.

We recommend bringing one medium bag with personal items not used when skiing. You must bring your own backcountry ski gear and equipment. We require that you bring a day backpack with a hip belt to use when skiing for safety equipment, food, water, a camera, and layers.

Day 2:Our first day of skiing

Breakfast is enjoyed at our accommodation, followed by a briefing for the day. A reconnaissance tour will then be conducted so that the guide can get to know each and every one of you. The trip you will do can be experienced as challenging, both in terms of altitude and length, but it will be done in less steep terrain so that your technique can also be tested along the way. This will give both you and your guide a good foundation before tomorrow. The day ends with après ski and dinner at our accommodation.

Day 7:Last descents and goodbye!

It is time to say goodbye to both mountains and people. Before this, we are fortunate enough to be able to squeeze in one last day of skiing so that you are left with both the most possible time in the mountains and also the most possible altitude meters from our stay. We schedule our return from Lyngen at 3.00 PM so that we are at Tromsø Airport approx. around 6.00 PM. We aim to get up early enough so that both showering and packing can be carried out with ease before returning.
