Lofoten, Værøy and Røst: Hiking to the secrets of the Lofoten Islands

Spectacular mountains, crystal clear water, secluded beaches, and intimate fishing communities are all ingredients of this trip. We visit the world-famous archipelago Lofoten but choose to emphasize on the hidden gems that the archipelago has to offer. From selected highlights in the north to Værøy and Røst in the south, this is Lofoten off the beaten track.

Lofoten can take the breath away from the most experienced globetrotter where the extraordinary landscape with small, authentic fishing villages and dramatic mountains extends far into the ocean gap. If you are looking for more hidden, intimate experiences with nature, while at the same time appreciating visiting places off the beaten track, this trip is for you. In the course of one week, we travel all the way from north to south, finishing the trip at Lofoten's two outermost outposts, Værøy and Røst.

Both Værøy and Røst gives us the opportunity to get close to two very isolated communities far out in the ocean. The two archipelagos are exposed to both weather and wind, but if you ask the locals, we can almost guarantee you that they allude to their island as Lofoten's most beautiful. From the top of Storfjellet on Røst, our last hike, we will literally look back on a fantastic week in this unique archipelago.

So that you can have a good experience, it is important that you choose a trip that suits your ability level. The scales for physical requirements and risk are general. Therefore, it is important that you read more about the difficulty of the specific trip under “Details”. This will help you to gain an understanding of the level required and the risks involved for each specific trip.

Physical: 2

We have to work a little to reach the destination. These are trips most people can handle, if they have a basic level of fitness. We sleep in comfortable tents and / or in cabins and hotels, but you do not have to have experience with tent life to join. The physical activity is the main element of the trip, such as cycling, kayaking, hiking, skiing / hiking or glacier hiking, but you do not need prior knowledge of the activity. Level 2 out of 6. Please read more about our level of difficulty here.

The different day hikes will involve 4-6 hours of moderate hiking. The path can be rocky and slippery if it rains. You should have previous hiking experience with similar conditions. Expect some easy scrambling at certain locations. Be prepared to be challenged if these conditions are new to you, or train for such hikes before the trip begins.


Norrøna Hvitserk Adventure places great emphasis on safety. If an accident happens, know that you will get help quickly. We have 24h emergency preparedness at our office when someone is on a trip. This person can be contacted if something happens during the trip. We place great demands on the local partners we use on the specific trip and also on the client's experience and understanding of our products.

Our guides are trained in first aid and have a selection of medicines and first aid equipment for necessary treatment in the field. Norrøna Hvitserk Adventure also has a collaboration with Turlegen.no which can be contacted if the group are in need of medical advice.

NB - If you are on any kind of medication, have known allergies, or something similar, you must always bring your personal medications with you.

What to bring?

Have a look at the full equipment list by clicking "Equipment list" in the menu above. You can leave your luggage at the accommodation each day, so when hiking, you only have to carry what you need for that specific day in your day backpack.  

How to get there?

The easiest way to get to our meeting point at Evenes Airport is to take a flight from one of Norway's main cities (Oslo, Bergen, Etc...) using an airline such as Norwegian or SAS.


We stay in unique and welcoming accommodations within the area. If you are traveling alone, you will share a same-sex twin room. If you would like a single room, please request this directly for an additional payment of 4000 NOK. Most nights we will stay in en-suite rooms, but not all. If you want a single room we can't guarantee en-suite room each day. 


We ask that you bring one piece of luggage (we recommend a duffel bag, which is easier than a rolling bag to transport on this tour) with your clothes, toiletries, and items necessary for you when we are not hiking. We also require that you bring a day backpack (hip belt strongly recommended) to use when we are hiking, for food, water, cameras, and layers.


You need a travel and health insurance, which also includes transportation back to your country. Remember to bring your insurance card/information. 


The guide will speak English.

Day by Day



Arrival at Evenes Airport/Transport to Skårungen

We meet at Evenes Airport at 4.00 PM. From here we drive all the way to Skårungen, our accommodation for the first two nights. This idyllic place is located just south of Svolvær so we have a two and a half-hour drive ahead of us. Upon arrival, we check into our rooms before getting ready for tonight's dinner. We enjoy a tasty 3-course meal as we go through the days ahead. If we really want to kickstart our trip we can take a refreshing evening swim in the sea, directly from Skårungen's private beach.



Half day kayak trip and visit to Henningsvær

After breakfast, it's time to do the first activity of the day. From Skårungen we paddle away among islets and reefs in our kayaks. After approx. four hours on the water we pack up and travel further south to the historic fishing village Henningsvær. The village is spread over several small islands that are sandwiched between the impressive mountain Vågakallen and the West Fjord. The combination of an active, living environment and the well-preserved architecture makes Henningsvær something completely unique. In the afternoon we travel back to Skårungen. A well-deserved dinner awaits before we can finish up in the wood-fired hot-tub/sauna in the evening if the group desires.  



Hike to Kvalvika and Ryten

After checking out from our accommodation we drive south, crossing the island of Flakstad, before continuing from Moskenesøy to Fredvang. Today's destination is the beach at Kvalvika and the nearby mountain Ryten. An absolutely fantastic area where green plains and steep mountains embrace each other. If we have time, we can also make a small discovery trip to Inge Wegge and Jørn Ranum's cabin at Kvalvika. This 14 square meter cabin was built as part of their winter project where they spent a full nine months on this beach to live hand in hand with nature. After the trip, we travel to our next accommodation, Eliassen Rorbuer, even further south. In the evening, we are served a 3-course dinner at the property's restaurant.



To Lofoten's second outermost outpost ... Værøy

Today we take the morning ferry for an hour and a half from Moskenes to Værøy. The island is a paradise for hiking enthusiasts and can offer everything from chalk-white beaches to mountain peaks with beautiful views. Our goal today is Håen (438 meters) or the NATO mountain as it is also called. The mountain is located in the middle of the island and is easy to get to. After the hike, we travel to Nordland, a small town with 150 inhabitants, where we stay at our accommodation for the next two nights. Here we also have the midnight sun opposite which will give us a fantastic backdrop throughout the evening! Værøy gives its visitors a sense of authenticity, and peace and quiet since we now are far away from the already trodden tourist trails. We live in the old, venerable Prestegården - a well-maintained guesthouse with a warm atmosphere and lovely food.

Which route we choose to hike today will depend on the weather forecast and the group's own preferences. An alternative could be Nordlandsnupen, the highest mountain on the island. From the top - if the weather is on our side - it will be possible to see the entire Lofoten Wall stretching out, with rock formations as far as the eye can see. The other option is Måhornet, a hike that runs along the coast, through beautiful flower meadows and abandoned villages. After spending the whole day exploring the island, we travel back to Prestegården for a well-deserved dinner and a relaxing last night at this wonderful place.



To Lofoten's outermost outpost... Røst

Today we go even further south to Røst, the outermost outpost in Lofoten. And the contrasts could not have been greater! Where Værøy is hilly with sharp rock formations, Røst is the exact opposite. This archipelago consists mostly of small islands and islets that just protrude above sea level. Upon arrival, we check-in at our accommodation before we are transported by boat by one of the locals to one of two possible mountains to climb on Røst. We of course go for the highest, Storfjellet at 260 meters above sea level. The trip is relatively easy, it can be steep at times, but it is not very long. If the weather is on our side, we can guarantee an absolutely fantastic view from the top. Blue sea as far as the eye can see, Værøy and the Lofoten Wall on the horizon, and if we are lucky we may be able to see all the way to the mainland and the Helgeland Coast. After the trip, we are transported back to the main islands. Here we enjoy our last dinner together before we take one last hike to check out the main islands by foot. The midnight sun will hopefully pave the way for a beautiful evening!



Guided stockfish tour/Ferry back to Bodø

Unfortunately, we have come to the final day of the trip. However, we have managed to squeeze in one more activity before we leave Røst. We are going to have a guided tour to learn more about stockfish. The inhabitants of Røst naturally use the sea's resources for income so stockfish is, as in the rest of Lofoten "big business" here too. We get a brief overview of the history of the stockfish at Røst, and at the same time learn more about the entire production process. After finishing the guided tour, we take the boat back to Bodø. The estimated arrival time in Bodø is 4.45 PM. We say goodbye to each other at the quay and wish each other a safe trip home after a fantastic week in Lofoten.


Equipment List

Take a good look at this list, and make sure you bring everything you need. We encourage you to use what you have for this trip, and purchase items if you're missing something important on the list below. We have divided the gear list into three categories:

  1. Required: If you do not own this gear, you must acquire it for your trip.
  2. Recommended: Gear we suggest to be comfortable, but it is not imperative.
  3. Optional: Fun, additional luxuries.  

Layering is extremely important in a variable climate like Norway. This list will guide you through the essentials. Remember the Norwegian saying "There is no bad weather, only bad gear", and prepare appropriately for any weather. You can read about the weather where you're traveling here.

We always recommend wool in the Norwegian Mountains, but if you already have synthetic layers and don't want to buy new ones, synthetic is okay. 


Wool long-sleeved top and bottom.
A medium thickness wool or fleece top.
A warm jacket for breaks and before after hiking. We recommend a puffy jacket with down or synthetic. Something equivalant in warmth is also okay.
We strongly recommend having a water proof layer for your legs in case the weather is cold and rainy. You will enjoy the hiking more when warm and comfortable.
Gore-Tex or similar is mandatory. Extrememly important in Norwegian climate. The jacket must be waterproof, have a hood, and make sure you don’t get wet even if it rains all day. We recommend jackets with pit zips for ventilation. 
Hiking pants comfortable for all day wear. Should fit your long underwear beneathe and fit under your rain shell pants if you choose to bring some. Zip off into shorts or an additional pair of shorts is option. 
Bring 1-2 shirts for daily hiking. 
1 thin pair of gloves to protect your hands. 1 pair of over mittens for additional warmth.
1 sun hat, 1 warm hat.
2-4 pairs, we recommend wool, above the ankle, in your preferred thickness. If your footwear is not waterproof consider a gortex sock option.
Bring footwear you know fits you and is comfortable. Trails can be wet and rocky. We recommend waterproof hiking boots. 
Daypack for warm layers, food, snacks, water and needed items. 20-40 liters.
UV rated, we recommend a strap to keep them in place and so they don't get lost.
Make sure the Chapstick has UV rated sunscreen in it. 
2 liter capacity. 
Personal basics: shampoo, conditioner, toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush, etc...
Make sure you bring any personal meds you need on your trip, and ensure the Hvitserk office is updated on your allergies or needs. 


We highly recommend bringing wool underwear and bra for hiking. No cotton.
A layer to protect your neck or face. 
We recommend a thermos for hot drinks to have with you all day.
A bathing suit and small towel if you would like to swim, hot tub or sauna depending on your trip. 
Most guests prefer hiking with poles. Helps with challenging terrain and to maintain energy over long days. 
Important item to always have in your backpack. Emergency backup and useful for long days. 
If you have certain hiking aids specific to you: i.e. blister care or ibuprofen, etc...
Its important to be present while hiking, but also a great joy to bring some snapshots home with you for memory lane. 
A reminder to bring a set of clothes for transfers, relaxing in the evenings, and non-hiking time. An extra, dry pair of shoes is recommended for after and before hiking.


If you need it for the bathroom or lunch. 
If you have a bathroom emergency while hiking. We use "pack it in pack it out" ethics, so you will need to carry out your used items and throw them away later.
If you are a light sleeper. 
In order to take notes and write about the trip.
Chocolate, nuts or energy bars if there is something particular you enjoy eating. You will have the opportunity to buy snacks on your trip.
To cover your eyes when sleeping in 24 hour light. You can aslo use your buff.

Bed linens and towels are included all nights.
