Kayaking on the Helgeland coast

Among 12,000 islands

Kayaking on the Helgeland coast

Among 12,000 islands

From USD 1351

Pointed mountains plunging into the sea, sea eagles and bustling wildlife, 12,000 small and large islands, chalk white sandy beaches, clear water, and midnight sun. Charming fishing villages, accommodation full of history, and good food interspersed with local myths and legends. Helgeland has everything a kayak adventurer could wish for.

Highlights

  • One of Norway's most beautiful paddling destinations
  • Accommodation at the renovated and charming old-school- "Skolo"
  • Locally known and experienced kayak guides
  • Hike to the majestic Dønnamannen

The Helgeland coast is known for its beautiful coastline and it is not without reason that the coastal culture has ended up on UNESCO's World Heritage List. With chalk-white beaches, countless islets and reefs, and small communities with unique histories and cultures, it is a mecca for kayaking. On this trip, we are based at the charming old school from 1954, which has been restored and rebuilt to become a unique accommodation, “Skolo”. Here we sleep and eat well, and have an excellent base for paddling trips in the area.

The tour starts on the idyllic island of Dønna, just outside Sandnessjøen. Here you meet your guides and the rest of the group and together you drive on to Seløya and our base for the next few days. We have 4 days at our disposal which we will fill with unique and memorable paddling in the fantastic archipelago. Day 3 we take a trip up to the iconic Dønnamannen, 853 meters above sea level. If the weather is fine, we can enjoy a fantastic view out over the thousand islets and reefs, and inland to the mainland and "The Seven Sisters”.

Physical level

3/6 Physical

On these trips, some of the stages are demanding. On level 3 mountain hikes, there are often some long stages, and / or a demanding summit push where it can get cold. You must stand up to reach the goal, and have a good training basis and good health before departure. We sleep in tents and / or in cabins and hotels, but you do not have to have experience with tent life to participate. If the trip includes activities such as kayaking, cycling, climbing, glacier, skiing / mountaineering, it is an advantage to have experience with this activity.

Risk level

3/6 Risk

Activities / trips with some risk. Some incidents may occur, and they may be of such a nature that they require professional help.

Safety and grading of trips

Training and preparations

You must be in good physical shape and have previous paddling experience to get the most out of this trip. It can often be windy on the Helgeland coast, so you must be comfortable being in the water, and master kayaking in waves and wind. Single and double kayaks will be used and changed during the trip.

Accommodation and food

We spend the night at the old charming school, "Skolo", on Seløya, which has now become a newly renovated and modern accommodation. A small family of 4 from Oslo bought the dilapidated school in 2018 and has turned the place into a lovely gathering spot with a lot of history and charm.

We eat breakfast and dinner at Skolo and take a packed lunch with us on most days.

Other information

The easiest way to get to the Helgeland coast is with the morning flight from Oslo to Sandnessjøen. From here there is an airport bus into the city center and a ferry over to "Bjørn" on the island of Dønna. Here at the ferry dock, you will meet your guides Vegard and Morten, and drive together to Seløya and your base for the next 4 days.

For timetables and information about the ferry from Sandnessjøen ferry quay to Bjørn ferry quay (Dønna), visit www.reisnordland.no. If you are from out of the country, please contact our office if you need assistance with travel plans.

Day 2:Seløya- Ytre Øksningan – Jønnesholmen – Nautøya - Litlnautøya

The day starts at the breakfast table at 08.30. Here we eat, plan the day, and make packed lunches/fill thermoses with the morning meal. Today we are going to burn some energy, and need hearty lunches to sustain us. We paddle south and west towards the area called Ytre Øksningan, find some nice sandy beaches all to ourselves and test the bathing temperature if we dare. We eat a bit, and continue through this conglomeration of islets and reefs up to Jønnesholmen, where we again stretch our legs and assess the bathing temperature. From there, we paddle on the east side of both Nautøya and Litlnautøya before finally turning our nose home towards Seløya. Here, too, today we will be served a good dinner and fill up our energy stores.

Day 3:Ascent of the fabled Dønnmannen

Get ready for spectacular views and airy peaks! The day starts at the breakfast table at 08:30. We plan, eat breakfast, make packed lunches, and fill thermoses. At 10 am we drive over to the trailhead before the ascent of Dønnmannen. An absolutely fantastic hiking tour. From the top of the 853m high mountain, we can see the vast majority of the coastal mountains on Helgeland. A real landmark on the Helgeland coast and something to tick off everyone's "bucket list". We take the time to enjoy the view at the top before we head back to the cars and enjoy a delicious dinner on Seløya. This is a relatively tough mountain hike that requires good shoes and experience. If you don't normally go hiking in the mountains, we recommend that you practice walking in the mountains beforehand as it will be both physically demanding and can be exposed. Some will choose to stay a little away from the steepest edges, and we encourage that! If someone thinks that this mountain tour can be so tough that they are unsure whether it is something for them, we have also included an alternative mountain tour to the much kinder Åkvikfjellet. With its 293m, it offers an impressive view in most directions without scaring our guests or being too challenging to enjoy.
