Island Hopping in Northern Norway

Visit Støtt, Rødøy, Lovund, Træna and Myken

From USD 2570

Imagine the midnight sun dancing on the horizon as it casts streaks of warm light against the many thousands of islands in front. At selected spots you will find small settlements, a fishing boat floating on the water, a couple of locals who strike up a conversation in the evening sun... There are few places in Norway that can compete with the beauty of the Helgeland Coast.

Highlights

  • Remote mountain hikes with vistas of tens of thousands of islands
  • Experience the Midnight Sun!
  • Kayak through small islands and inlets around Støtt
  • Explore Træna – one of Norway’s most creative and isolated municipalities
  • Live the local lifestyle traveling by express boat from island to island
  • See Puffins and Sea Eagles up close and personal
  • Spend one night with the vast ocean as your closest neighbor at Myken Fyr
  • Drink whiskey on Myken – at the world's first Arctic single malt whisky distillery, with whisky made from desalinated Arctic seawater, matured under the Midnight Sun and the Northern Lights.

The Helgeland coast is far less visited than Lofoten, more remote, but still just as dramatic and fantastic! On this trip, we visit islands such as Støtt, Rødøy, Lovund, Træna, and Myken, all distinctive island communities with both soul and charm unlike anywhere else in our country. We take the local express boat between the different islands, and experience what they have to offer on foot - with one exception, a truly magnificent kayak trip on Støtt. Are you the type who likes to visit places off the beaten track? Then this is the trip for you.

We at Norrøna Hvitserk Adventure are committed to giving our travelers experiences that are intimate, interactive, and engaging so that they are left with a unique insight into the different local communities we visit. We also try, as best we can, to limit our footprint while we are on a trip. This trip is therefore built around an already existing express boat network, in addition to the fact that we both eat and sleep in places that are run and owned by the locals.

Physical level

2/6 Physical

We have to work a little to reach the destination. These are trips most people can handle, if they have a basic level of fitness. We sleep in comfortable tents and / or in cabins and hotels, but you do not have to have experience with tent life to join. The physical activity is the main element of the trip, such as cycling, kayaking, hiking, skiing / hiking or glacier hiking, but you do not need prior knowledge of the activity.

Safety and grading of trips

Risk level

2/6 Risk

Activities / trips with low risk. There are usually few incidents, and they are usually of such a nature that they can be treated locally.

Safety and grading of trips

Training and preperations

The different day hikes will involve 4-6 hours of moderate hiking. The path can be rocky and slippery if it rains. You should have previous hiking experience with similar conditions.

Expect some easy scrambling at certain locations. Be prepared to be challenged if these conditions are new to you, or train for such hikes before the trip begins. For the kayak trip, no previous experience is needed, but you should be comfortable in and around the water.

Accommodation and food

We stay in unique and welcoming accommodations within the area. If you are traveling alone, you will share a same-sex twin room. If you would like a single room, please request this directly upon registration for an additional payment of 4000 NOK.

Most nights we will stay in en-suite rooms, but not all. If you want a single room we can't guarantee en-suite room each day.

All food is included as described in the day to day itinerary.

Other information

The easiest way to get to our meeting point in Bodø is to take a flight from one of the main cities in Norway (Oslo, Bergen, etc...) using airlines such as Norwegian, SAS, or Flyr. You can also reach Bodø by train, booking a reservation with VY.

We ask that you bring one piece of luggage (we recommend a duffel bag, which is easier than a rolling bag to transport on this tour) with your clothes, toiletries and items necessary for you when we are not hiking/kayaking. We also require that you bring a day backpack (hip belt strongly recommended) to use when we are hiking/kayaking, for food, water, cameras, and layers.

Day 3:The view of a thousand islands

After a lovely breakfast, we set the course for Rødøyløva. The 443-meter high mountain is a classic in the skerries. The two-hour walk to the top is rewarded with spectacular views! The Helgeland coast has over 12,000 islands - and you will be able to see hundreds of them from the top. If the weather is good, we make a small stop at Storsand - a pristine, whitewashed sandy beach - which is a perfect stop for a good cup of coffee or a late lunch. In the afternoon we enjoy an early dinner at Klokkergården before we travel to our next island, Lovund. Upon arrival, we check into our accommodation, before enjoying a quiet evening in idyllic surroundings.

Day 4:Hiking on Lovund

From our accommodation at Lovund, we set sights to reach the top of Lovundfjellet, the majestic rock formation that makes up most of this small island. The top offers magnificent panoramic views of the Helgeland Coast. We also have the opportunity, depending on the weather, to take a short trip to the puffins on the west side of the mountain. Here thousands of puffins fly among the high cliffs above the sea. Back from the mountain, we enjoy a delicious dinner at the hotel restaurant before we take the express boat to our next destination, Træna. We arrive at the accommodation and enjoy a quiet evening together. Note! The hike to the top of Lovundfjellet is the most demanding hike during the week. If the terrain becomes too steep, or too demanding for some of the participants, we will go back down again. The most important thing is that we have a great day together on this spectacular island.

Day 5:Hiking on Træna

Today we will explore Træna! This archipelago has around 450 permanent residents and is located approximately 40 km from the mainland. This is one of Norway's smallest and most unique municipalities. After breakfast, we get a brief introduction to life on the archipelago, both seen through the eyes of the present and the past. Later this morning we continue our discovery of the islands directly across the strait, on the neighboring island of Sanna where we explore the island on foot. Possible places we can visit are Kirkhelleren, Tunnelen, or Gompen, the latter a beautiful vantage point where there is also a radar station situated at the top. In the afternoon we take the boat back across the strait before eating a tasty dinner at one of the local cafes. If we still urge to explore more of the island after today's program we can take a short walk in the evening as well.

Day 6:Arctic whiskey under the midnight sun

Although it's difficult to say goodbye to Træna, it's time to move on. We board the express boat that will take us to our last island, Myken. This archipelago consists of 40 small islands, 32 km from the mainland. We visit the world's first Arctic single malt whiskey distillery, with whiskey made from desalinated Arctic seawater, matured under the midnight sun and the northern lights. We get a tour of the distillery before a tasting awaits. Then we enjoy a 3-course dinner in the restaurant above the distillery.
