The Best of Lofoten

Land of the midnight sun

The Best of Lofoten

Land of the midnight sun

From USD 3310

We've picked out the best hikes, the most iconic viewpoints, as well as some hidden gems on our eight-day exploration of perhaps Norway's most beautiful archipelago. Dramatic mountains, long white beaches, wild seas and rich wildlife give us great experiences of Norwegian nature at its very best!

Highlights

  • Hike four of Lofoten's most iconic peaks
  • Join us on a boat trip on the Reinefjord followed by a hike to Bunesstranda
  • Enjoy three-course dinners with traditional "dried fish", a key factor for the economy in Lofoten's history
  • A great coastal walk with a view of the North Sea
  • Explore the traditional fishing villages in Lofoten that can be dated back hundreds of years
  • Stay in traditional rorbu's
  • Experience the midnight sun from June to August, or the northern lights in September (depending on the season)

In Lofoten, there is a midnight sun from the end of May until the end of July. The sight of a warm sun that never reaches below the bottom of the horizon is spectacular, to say the least. In August, the sun dips below the horizon around 10.30 pm, but it will still be light all day. If we move into September, the contrasts are turned upside down. Then it is possible to see the Northern Lights. You probably already realize that Lofoten is a very special place with great seasonal variations. And not enough of that. Lofoten also has a natural beauty that can take the breath away of the most seasoned globetrotter. Sharp mountains, narrow straits, cozy fishing villages, and a long, rich history are some of the many highlights the destination can offer.

The trip starts in Bodø, a city that is easily accessible by direct flight from both Oslo and Bergen. We spend the first night here before traveling the following morning by ferry to Moskenes (on the last departure of the summer, the boat will be replaced by a plane). The week we spend in Lofoten is flexible, in other words, we adapt the day trips to weather and wind, there may therefore be changes in the days, but we try to reach all the goals described in the day-to-day program. After a week in Lofoten, the trip ends at Evenes Airport, where there is a direct flight back to Oslo. If you wish to end the tour in Svolvær, you are of course free to do so as well.

Safety and grading of trips

Physical level

3/6 Physical

On these trips, some of the stages are demanding. On level 3 mountain hikes, there are often some long stages, and / or a demanding summit push where it can get cold. You must stand up to reach the goal, and have a good training basis and good health before departure. We sleep in tents and / or in cabins and hotels, but you do not have to have experience with tent life to participate. If the trip includes activities such as kayaking, cycling, climbing, glacier, skiing / mountaineering, it is an advantage to have experience with this activity.

Safety and grading of trips

Risk level

2/6 Risk

Activities / trips with low risk. There are usually few incidents, and they are usually of such a nature that they can be treated locally.

Safety and grading of trips

Training and preperations

The various hikes will be approximately 3-6 hours long. You have to expect light splitting as well as it can be slippery if it rains. You should have experience with similar conditions.

Lofoten can be wet, with steep paths that can often be very muddy and slippery. Be prepared to be challenged if these conditions are new to you, or train for such hikes before the trip begins.

Accommodation and food

We stay at unique and welcoming accommodation in the area. If you are traveling alone, you will share a twin room with someone of the same sex.

If you want a single room, you can request this directly for an additional surcharge of NOK 5,000. Most nights we will stay in a room with a private bathroom, but not all. If you want a single room, we cannot guarantee a room with a private bathroom every day.

Other information

The easiest way to get to Bodø is to fly from either Oslo or Bergen with Norwegian or SAS. You can also reach Bodø by train. A train booking can be reserved through www.vy.no

Due to limited space in the minibus, we ask that you bring a bag (we recommend a duffel bag, as this is easier to handle than a rolling suitcase in the areas we visit) of clothes, toiletries and items needed when we are away on hikes. We also ask that you bring a daypack (hip belt is strongly recommended) for food, water, camera and extra clothes for the various hikes we are going on.

Day 2:Hike to Reinebringen

We take a 4-hour ferry ride from Bodø to Lofoten early in the morning, with breakfast packed and ready from the hotel so that we can enjoy it during the trip. After arriving in Lofoten, we drive to the starting point for our first hike, Reinebringen (448 m). The trip takes 3-4 hours, and it takes you to one of Norway's most spectacular views. Reinebringen has recently reopened with a brand new trail, made by Sherpas hired from Nepal. They have constructed a "stairway to heaven" made of large boulders. The path is easy to follow but it will be a real workout! After the tour, we check in to our rorbu and have dinner together in the evening.

Day 3:Hike to Bunes Beach

After breakfast we take the local boat from Reine, across the Kjerkfjord and to Vindstad. From here we go towards Bunesstranda. This beach is a truly remarkable place where pointed mountains shoot up from the surface of the sea. We eat lunch by the beach, maybe also take a bath if it's tempting, before we go back to Vindstad for the boat trip back to Reine. In the evening, we are served another well-deserved dinner at the accommodation's restaurant.

Day 5:Hike to Himmeltinden

After a good breakfast, we aim for the highest mountain on the trip. We drive to Hauklandstranda, one of the most beautiful beaches in Lofoten, before we go to the top of Himmeltinden (964 m), the highest mountain in this part of Lofoten. The trip takes 5-6 hours and in good weather the view out to the sea and to the rest of Lofoten is fantastic. If the weather prevents us from walking this mountain, we have alternative routes with equally stunning views. After the trip, we drive back to Nusfjord for a last night here. Dinner tonight is served in the accommodation's restaurant.

Day 6:Coastal hike from Unstad to Eggum

We check out and travel further northeast from Nusfjord to Unstad. If the weather is good, we spend some time on the beach, have a coffee and enjoy the surroundings before we start on the coastal path between Unstad and Eggum. This hike is one of the most famous hikes in Lofoten, and it will certainly give you a real stomachache as the sea gap is right below us at the start of the hike. Later, the terrain will flatten out more, and the trip will be easier. In the afternoon we drive to Svolvær. Here we live on the lovely Svinøya Rorbuer right outside the city centre. Dinner will be served this evening in the accommodation's restaurant.

Otherwise, the sea encircles Henningsvær. We spend the morning exploring the city, before heading to the top of Festvågtinden (541 m) in the afternoon. From the top we can enjoy a lovely panoramic view of Henningsvær, the Vestfjorden and the Steigen area on the other side of the fjord. Day 8:Transfer to Evenes Flyplass

After breakfast, the trip unfortunately comes to an end. We drive from Svolvær and to Evenes Airport for the flight home. We plan to be there so that the guests catch their flights from 15.00 onwards. This means that we leave Svolvær around 10.00 in the morning. If you prefer to stay in Svolvær, it is also possible to fly from here, but then you will most likely have to stop over in Bodø for the onward flight to Oslo. It is also possible to take the express boat from Svolvær to Bodø if you want to see even more of the beautiful islands between mainland Norway and Lofoten. This boat trip takes approximately 4 hours. We hope that the trip in Lofoten will give you memories for a lifetime, and dreams of new visits in the future.
