Experience Sogn and Luster

Skitouring for beginners

From USD 982

Few ski resorts in the country can compete with Sogn and Luster. Good snow conditions and accessibility have made this place one of Norway's most popular ski area. In combination with the beautiful Nes Gard, the conditions are set for wonderful alpine experiences!

Highlights

  • One of Norway's best ski touring areas
  • Stay in traditional and idyllic Nes Gard

Almost at the heart of the beautiful Lustrafjord lies Nes Gard- a newly renovated farm yard from approx. 1850. Accessibility, good snow conditions and varied skiing have made Sogn by far one of the country's most popular ski areas, and Nes Gard is perfectly located to experience the best Sogn has to offer.

Once home from daily skiing, we benefit from a quality host that has developed service over generations. Traditional après ski, a newly opened wine bar and heated hot tub are first on the menu. This is the trip for those of you who have tried your hand at ski touring before, but who would like a little more knowledge about avalanche theory, route selection, ski technique and making assessments on a trip. It is an advantage that you have ridden alpine/telemark/randonee before.

Physical level

2/6 Physical

We have to work a little to reach the destination. These are trips most people can handle, if they have a basic level of fitness. We sleep in comfortable tents and / or in cabins and hotels, but you do not have to have experience with tent life to join. The physical activity is the main element of the trip, such as cycling, kayaking, hiking, skiing / hiking or glacier hiking, but you do not need prior knowledge of the activity.

Safety and grading of trips

Risk level

2/6 Risk

Activities / trips with low risk. There are usually few incidents, and they are usually of such a nature that they can be treated locally.

Training and preparation

This tour is suitable for those of you who are new to the top tour segment and for those who have ridden a little before, but want to learn basic techniques, safety and trip planning. To make the most of the weekend, you should be in good physical shape and have been on alpine, randonee or telemark trips before.

The weekend gives you an introduction to ski touring for beginners, without going through the topics as thoroughly as we do on our pure courses. If it is a pure ski touring course you want, we can recommend the Ski Touring course at Vatnahalsen.

Avalanche equipment is mandatory for each participant, and it is an advantage if you know how to use it, but not a requirement. An introductory course in the use of avalanche beacons will be included in the tour programme.

Accommodation

We spend the night in a double room at Nes Gård, which is located at the entrance to three national parks: Jostedalen, Breheimen and Sognefjellet. All rooms have private bathrooms, different interiors and the outdoor area is a beautiful place to relax after a day of touring. It is also possible to stay in a private room for a single room supplement of NOK 2,500.

Transport

The easiest way to get to Sogn is by private car, possibly a rental car from the airport in Sogndal. We need private cars to drive to the starting point for each days summit tours. If we return somewhere other than where the cars are parked, we take a taxi back to the starting point, or shuttle cars and split the bill.

Day 2:Mountains

After a hearty breakfast, we take off for today's ski trip. We look at the weather and driving conditions and choose based on that, with the guides advice. Once at home on the farm, there will be an après-ski, a hot tub and a three-course dinner. Perhaps we will have time to visit the new wine bar at Nes Gard. We enjoy ourselves with like-minded people in the pleasant atmosphere on the farm before retiring for the evening.

Day 3:Ski touring

We are eagerly following the weather forecast and preparing for the same plan as yesterday. Has there been fresh snow? How does it affect the choice of route? Is there powder? We look at the conditions, make decisions together with guides and travel to the best area. It is intended that participants can contribute and ask about trail selection, avalanche danger and other aspects that will make you better equipped for later trips.
