From USD 125

Introductory courses in Sea Kayaking are useful if you own a kayak or want to rent one. During this 3,5 hour kayak course, you will get to know the equipment and its use, and learn how to stay safe on the water while learning different paddling techniques and buddy rescue. Last but not least, we are going to have a lot of fun! The course requires no prior experience and provides an NPF Våttkort. It suits both those who have some experience kayaking but haven't yet obtained the Våttkort, and those who are in the starting phase and want to try sea kayaking. We are located in Lysaker, easily accessible by public transport and car. Indoor premises with changing facilities, toilet, and storage is included.

Highlights

  • Get to know the kayak and how to dress during different seasons
  • Information and dry training on land with regard to spray skirt, sitting position, and handling of the paddle
  • How to carry the kayak, place it on the water, and get in/out
  • Basic information about safety on the water
  • Practical exercises where we learn different paddle strokes to be able to move in all directions
  • Buddy rescue (capsizing the kayak, getting out of it while being in the water, and getting back into it with the help of a partner)
  • The course is based on the standard of Norges Padleforbund (NPF) but has been developed with some extra elements in addition to this
  • The aim of the course is to create both safety and joy while kayaking, as well learning techniques to train and build on
  • Provides Våttkort for intro course, this card itself is included in the course price

Time and place

Time: The course lasts 3,5 hours, from 17:00 to 20:30 on weekdays, and from 11:00 to 14:30 on weekends and on public holidays.

Place: The couse will be held at Lysaker. The adress is Lilleakerveien 2C, close to Lysaker train station, on the other side of the river. See the map here. Due to the development of the Fornebubanen, there is ongoing construction work in the area we use. This means that access and parking may have changed somewhat from before the work started.

How to get there: The location is easiest accessible by train to Lysaker, with a 5-minute walk to the meeting place. If you arrive by car, there are parking lots with payment in proximity to the course location or at the mall (CC Vest) close by.

Where do we kayak? From our meeting point in the lower part of the Lysaker River, we kayak a few hundred meters on the river before we end up in the scenic Lysaker Fjord. Here we have plenty of space and can choose between several nice areas to do our kayaking exercises, depending on the conditions we have.

Equipment and clothing

We provide: Kayaks, paddles, PFDs, and spray skirts, as well as common equipment such as bilge pumps and first aid kits. We also have water shoes for kayaking, and some waterproof bags. Our kayaks come in various sizes, and the paddles are adjustable so that they fit each one the best way possible. The kayaks are stable and easy to handle so that you can have the best possible basis for learning while feeling safe. We use nylon spray skirts that are quick and easy to put on and remove.

You bring: If you have access to a dry suit (spring and autumn), or a wet suit (spring, summer, and autumn), this can be very nice to use. If you don't have a suit, put on clothes that you can swim in; start from the water temperature, then the weather forecast above water. You will receive a detailed overview of what to bring with you by email when you register.

Practical info

Prerequisites: You must be 16 years and above to participate (14+ with a guardian). It is a requirement that you can swim.

Language: This course is held in English.

Food and drink: It can be nice to bring something to drink, as well as some quick and easy snacks - like chocolate or an energy bar.

Toilets: We have toilets that can be used before and after being on the water.

Storage and valuables: This can be stored in our locked storage room. Indoor changing is possible, although we recommended arriving ready.

Safety

  • 24 hour emergency standby team
  • Guides with training in first aid
  • First aid equipment available
  • Cooperation with Turlegen.no for medical advice while in the field

Physical level

2/6 Physical

We have to work a little to reach the destination. These are trips most people can handle, if they have a basic level of fitness. We sleep in comfortable tents and / or in cabins and hotels, but you do not have to have experience with tent life to join. The physical activity is the main element of the trip, such as cycling, kayaking, hiking, skiing / hiking or glacier hiking, but you do not need prior knowledge of the activity.
