Crossing Østmarka in Packraft

Local wilderness tour in Oslo

From USD 298

Our capital has more than just urban life to offer, in the forests around Oslo you can easily access the feeling of wilderness. We therefore want to take you on a trip through Østmarka - in a packraft! Here we will paddle from lake to lake. We have the freedom to do what we want along the way; swim, fish and spend the night in hammocks at one of the many fantastic campsites in the area. We will simply enjoy two full days of Norwegian outdoor life.

Highlights

  • Exploring urban wilderness
  • Two days in a packraft
  • Good fishing opportunities
  • A cozy evening in our camp
  • The opportunity to sleep in an Amok hammock

Østmarka is one of Oslomarka's (meaning the forest surrounding Oslo) most famous gems, and if you haven't been here yet, we can strongly recommend a visit. Østmarka is formed from over 1,000 million-year-old bedrock, and is characterized by north-south running hills and valleys. Therefore, we also find many lakes and rivers that flow in the same direction, and form an eldorado for those who like to travel on water.

The trip starts and ends on foot, but mostly consits of paddling from water to water in a packraft. This wonderful means of transport is easy to paddle and also easy to carry on your back when not paddling - both inflated and deflated. The aim is to paddle as much as possible, and only go on foot where we have to. We are looking for the feeling of the wilderness on this trip, so the shortest route isnt always the priority, but primarily traveling in the most remote and beautiful areas. Along the way, we will paddle through the Østmarka nature reserve, and approx. half way we will camp for the night.

For those who want to fish: In Østmarka you can catch Trout, Pike, Perch and Whitefish. The fishing license is a reasonable price and can be purchased individually from OFA. (Ask for more details upon booking).

Day 1:From Oslo to the heart of Østmarka

We meet outside Oslo S (the taxi stand by the flight train) at 08.30 in the morning. From here we are transported to Losby Besøksgård where we are given equipment - packraft, oar, paddling vest, communal equipment, food - and a fantastic Amok hammock! When the equipment is distributed and the bags are on the back, the journey starts on foot on a hiking trail, before after a couple of kilometers we arrive at Mønevann where we inflate the packrafts and paddle on, from water to water. After a good lunch, we paddle into Østmatrka Nature Reserve, an area that has been protected since 1990. Like the rest of Østmarka, this area has a rich flora and fauna, and even wolves roam here! Østmarka is also home to the beaver, and along the way we see clear traces of its ravages. About halfway we find a suitable place where we camp for the evening. We cook dinner together, and if it rains we hang up tarps so we can stay dry in true Lars Monsen style.

Day 2:A piece of real wilderness on the way

After breakfast, we paddle on, stopping along the way for a well-deserved lunch break. If we're lucky with the weather, we might even get a cooling bath! Midway we meet at the wildest part, and especially here we can observe how nature behaves when it is given free rein. Here the path is sometimes indistinct, and no one has cleared the trees that have fallen over it because of old age, or because the beaver has felled them. We must slowly but surely work our way through this area, which contains both paddling and the trip's most demanding walking stages. It will be wild, wet and challenging! With just over two kilometers left of today's distance, we take our last paddle roofs for this time, let the air out of the rafts, and follow the dirt road out of the field and into the settlement. Here we are picked up in the late afternoon and driven back to Oslo S.

Safety and grading of trips

Physical level

2/6 Physical

We need to exert some effort to reach our destination. With a good level of fitness and determination, these journeys are manageable for the majority of participants. Being active in daily life is a beneficial preparation.

Risk level

2/6 Risk

Activities/trips with little risk. There are usually few incidents and they are usually of such a nature that they can be dealt with locally.

Training and preperations

The trip mostly involves easy paddling. We only paddle on water, we don't go down riverbeds or rapids, and the packrafts are safe and stable. We have to carry the pack power through certain areas between the waters where we walk.

You do not need to have paddled packraft before to join this trip, you will receive a brief introduction to paddling technique before we set off. It is a requirement that you can swim to participate.

Accommodation and food

We sleep in Amok hammocks from Saturday to Sunday. These are solid hammocks where you lie horizontally. If bad weather is reported, we also bring tarps that we can hang over ourselves so that we don't get wet. Hammock with sleeping mat, and tarp if necessary, are included in the tour price.

Together with a waterproof bag for transport, this weighs approx. 3 kg. If you have a small and light tent yourself, and you have room for this in your bag, you can use this instead if you wish.

We cook dinner on the primus together on Saturday evening, and we also have freeze-dried tour food for breakfast and lunch on Sunday. Lunch on Saturday, as well as snacks and drinks, is provided by the individual. We boil the water from the waters we paddle on if there is a need for extra drinking water, so it can be practical to bring a large drinking bottle that can withstand hot water (Nalgene 1 liter hard plastic is recommended). If you have a water purification bottle, you can of course use this.

Other information

The tour starts on Saturday at 08.30 at Oslo S (the taxi stand by the flight train). From here we are transported to Losby Besøksgård where we head into Østmarka. The total distance we cover is approx. 22 kilometers, and we expect to spend two whole days on the trip.

We paddle most of the stretch but have to carry packraft and equipment with us in certain places where the different waters are not connected to each other. The stages are mostly short, from 50 meters up to the longest and last, which is just over 2 km. The trip ends in the afternoon/evening on Sunday after we have been transported back to Oslo S.

Since it will be a long time getting in and out of the boat, we recommend packing compactly, and having only one parcel, so that you don't have things hanging on the outside of the bag or in your hands when we go. Feel free to pack several times before departure so that you can exclude any redundant things you don't need. It is necessary to pack 100% waterproof even if there is a reported stay, as it is difficult to keep the bag dry while paddling. Take a bag big enough for you to have room for approx. 15 liters of communal equipment/hammock etc.

Equipment list

This list is intended as a guideline, so that we have what we need regardless of the weather we get on the trip. Remember that you can also get used hiking equipment that works perfectly.
