Crossing Nordmarka in Packraft

Local wilderness tour in Oslo

Crossing Nordmarka in Packraft

Local wilderness tour in Oslo

From USD 363

Our capital has more than just urban life to offer, in the forests around Oslo it is also possible to feel the feeling of the wilderness. We therefore want to take you on a trip through Nordmarka - in a packraft! Here we will paddle from water to water, and we have the freedom to do what we want along the way; we can swim, fish and spend the nights in hammocks at one of the many fantastic campsites in the area. We will simply enjoy three full days of hiking life!

Highlights

  • Exploring urban wilderness
  • Three days in packraft
  • Good fishing opportunities
  • Cozy evenings in our camp
  • The opportunity to sleep in an Amok hammock

In the forests north of Oslo there are an incredible number of small and large bodies of water, and by using these as transport vessels it is possible to experience the area in a completely new and different way. In a packraft you get to all the most beautiful places along the waters, even where there is no path or road.

Our tour starts at Mylla exit parking, in the far north of Nordmarka. Over the course of three days, we paddle from water to water south through the countryside, a distance of around 47 kilometres, before we end up at Øyungen in Maridalen. Between the waters there are several stages on foot, so we simply fasten the pack power on our back - with or without air - and take our legs. The campsites are located like pearls on a string throughout the field, on headlands, headlands or on small islands, so it will not be a problem to find a suitable place to camp after the various stages of the day. We hang up the hammocks or set up the tent (depending on what you prefer), and spend the evening together with collective cooking and socializing. Perhaps there will also be a robbery story or two throughout the evening?

For those who want to fish along the way: In Nordmarka you can catch both Trout, Pike, Perch, Trout, Lake and Whitefish. The fishing license is affordable and is purchased by the individual from OFA.

Safety and grading of trips

Physical level

3/6 Physical

Some segments of the journey may prove challenging. It's essential to possess a solid level of fitness prior to departure. Persistence will be required in reaching the trip's goal.

Risk level

2/6 Risk

Activities/trips with little risk. There are usually few incidents and they are usually of such a nature that they can be dealt with locally.

Training and preperations

The trip mostly involves easy paddling, mainly on flat water. The pack forces are safe and stable. We have to carry the pack power through certain areas where we have to walk on footpaths or gravel.

You do not need to have paddled packraft before to join this trip, you will receive a brief introduction to paddling technique before we set off. This tour involves more walking and longer day stages than our packraft tour in Østmarka. It is a requirement that you can swim to participate.

Accommodation and food

We sleep in Amok hammocks from Friday to Sunday. These are solid hammocks where you lie horizontally. If bad weather is reported, we also bring tarps that we can hang over ourselves so that we don't get wet. Hammock with sleeping mat, and tarp if necessary, are included in the tour price.

Together with a waterproof bag for transport, this weighs approx. 3 kg. If you have a small and light tent yourself, and you have room for this in your bag, you can use this instead if you wish.

We cook dinner together on the stove on Friday and Saturday evenings, and we also have freeze-dried tour food for breakfast and lunch on Saturday and Sunday. Lunch on Friday, as well as snacks and drinks, is provided by the individual. We boil the water from the waters we paddle on for drinking water, so it can be practical to bring one or two large drinking bottles that can withstand hot water (Nalgene 1 liter hard plastic is recommended). If you have a water purification bottle, you can of course use this instead.

Other information

The tour starts on Friday at 09.00 at Oslo S (the taxi stand by the flight train). From here we are transported to Mylla where we head into Nordmarka. The total distance we are covering is between 47 and 50 kilometers, depending on the route chosen along the way, and we expect to spend three whole days on the trip.

We paddle most of the stretch, but have to carry packraft and equipment with us in certain places where the different waters are not connected to each other. We arrive at the Skar exit car park where the tour ends in the afternoon/evening on Sunday. From here it is easy to take a regular bus to Oslo after we have delivered equipment and said goodbye to each other.

Since it will be a long time getting in and out of the boat, we recommend packing compactly, and having only one parcel, so that you don't have things hanging on the outside of the bag or in your hands when we go. Feel free to pack several times before departure so that you can exclude any redundant things you don't need. It is necessary to pack 100% waterproof even if there is a reported stay, as it is difficult to keep the bag dry while paddling. Take a bag big enough for you to have room for approx. 15 liters of communal equipment/hammock etc.

Day by day

Day 1:From Oslo to Nordmarka

We meet outside Oslo S (the taxi stand by the flight train) at 09.00 in the morning. From here we are transported to Mylla exit parking where we are given the equipment we need - packraft, oar, paddling vest, communal equipment, food - and one of our fantastic Amok hammocks! When the equipment has been distributed, the packrafts inflated and the bags packed, we take a short introduction to paddling technique. Finally we fasten the bags securely to the rafts before we take our first paddles on the trip south. Soon we will find ourselves deep in Oslo's green forests! Here it is not difficult to find peace, or to feel the feeling of genuine joy of walking - despite the fact that we are not far from the capital. Already today, we will feel what it is like to switch between paddling and walking, but we will quickly get into this routine. We carry the rafts inflated or take the air out, depending on the density of vegetation and the length of the stage. In the afternoon we find a suitable place where we set up camp before cooking dinner in the evening.

Day 2:Through the heart of Nordmarka

After breakfast, we paddle on with the sun on our faces, and have plenty of time to observe the nature around us. If the weather is at its best, we stop along the way for a cooling bath, and of course a well-deserved lunch break. When the afternoon's paddling stage is completed, we find a suitable campsite for the night and settle down. How about a three-course dinner? - perhaps someone has got fish that we can prepare for a starter?

Day 3:From Nordmarka to Oslo

We continue our journey south, and today we will, among other things, paddle on the impressive Bjørnsjøen, before we head for several smaller bodies of water, and end up at Øyungen in the heart of Maridalen at the end of the day. Here we let the air out of the packs for the very last time, and embark on the final stage on foot for a few kilometers on an easy hiking trail. At Skar exit parking, we end the trip after we have delivered equipment and said goodbye. You can take the regular bus from here to the city centre.

Testimonial

"Absolutely fantastic tour and fantastic guide! I am super satisfied! Really liked that there was no time pressure and stress. I think the pace was very good, the day's stages were perfect and it was great that on Saturday the wind conditions on the water were taken into account so that camp was made a little earlier than planned."
